Specials
Despite our best efforts it is not always possible to obtain a viable solution
from standard chucks and jaws. In these instances a dedicated solution built
around the component and machine tool is necessary.
UEW has built up a great deal of experience in the design and manufacture
of special workholding. Our factory is heavily geared towards
the specials work, for which we receive so much interest. We pride
ourselves on a service which offers a quick turn round time from
initial concept through to delivery
and installation.
A benchmark of our success in this field must be the repeated business
we secure from many end users and machine tool manufacturers/importers.
In every instance we try to ensure that our products best meet the needs
of the customer.

Special Jaws
Any jaw requirement falling outside our standard range can be deemed special.
Most special jaws are required to hold obscure and unusual
components. We have a wealth of experience providing solutions to suit
most makes
and models of chuck.
Some manufacturers offer jaws within their range that we
do not carry. In the past many customers
have complained that these 'standard' jaws are seldom available. UEW
can offer these
jaws as specials; price
and delivery on application.
Basic Special Jaws
Our jaw catalogue details all the relevant dimensions to which we manufacture
our standard jaw range. On request we can alter these jaw dimension(s)*.

Special Chucks
We believe that our ability to solve complex workholding issues is based
on a number of factors. Our design team is long established, with entire
careers spent in the field of workholding. Wherever possible our designs
are drawn upon from proven methods of workholding. Regular investment
in design aids and production equipment means shorter lead times, right
through from the conceptual stage. Many employees within UEW are graduate
engineers.
Our special chucks are best illustrated by a couple of examples:-
This type of special collet chuck was designed and manufactured on behalf
of British Nuclear Fuels Limited. As you would expect the design brief
stipulated many design constraints. The chucks are used to manipulate
fuel rods, therefore, due to contamination can not be handled directly.
Collet extraction tooling was also supplied to simplify changeovers when
conducted through the barrier screen.
To date our largest special chuck has been 1450mm in diameter but we can
supply larger chucks if requested.
Special Fixtures
The design and manufacture of dedicated fixtures has been the corner stone
of our business since 1941; every enquiry we receive can be regarded
as special in design.
We can offer solutions from the simplest manual fixtures to complex systems
controlled by PLC and incorporated into your machine tools controller*.
